how you can help

One of Renan Almendarez Coello's life-long dreams became a reality when he opened the "El Cucuy Help Center," ("Centro de Ayuda El Cucuy") in February 2003 at the California Hospital Medical Center. The "Centro de Ayuda" is a help center and referral service dedicated to serving the urgent needs of Los Angeles County's most poverty stricken Latino communities. With space donated by California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) and operating funds from the El Cucuy Foundation, the El Cucuy Help Center serves as an information-clearing house. When residents visit the office or call the toll free number 800-516-3133, they are able to request information about a broad range of critical needs, including legal aid, physical and mental health services, employment and youth programs and other essential services that serve the diverse needs of Los Angeles County Latinos, both immigrant and U.S. born.

The Help Center provides referrals to qualified agencies offering specialized services, such as nonprofit social service and healthcare providers, community-based organizations, legal aid centers, and immigrant support groups to ensure that the needs of individuals and families are fully and appropriately met. Renán uses his powerful radio platform to let his nearly 2.5 million listeners know more about the center. Many of his listeners compose the population the Help Center hopes to reach. The El Cucuy Foundation estimates that the Help Center has provided assistance to over 1,600 families and individuals so far this year, and continues to grow.

The El Cucuy Help Center is now located at 420 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA  90015
